What to do about spiders in the house

Spiders are generally considered to be beneficial; as predators, they keep insect pests in check.  But many don’t want these 8-legged crawlers moving around inside the house.  To prevent spiders from entering your house:

  • Seal any cracks in the foundation or gaps around windows and doors.
  • Inspect window and door screens for good seals to keep out spiders and the insects they prey on.
  • Keep clutter off the floor indoors and around home foundations outside.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum regularly indoors.

To manage spiders that may have made it inside:

  • Catch the spider and move outside.
  • Vacuum up the spider and its web.
  • Remove spider webs with a broom or cobweb duster tool.

While some research suggests citrus scents like orange oil may deter spiders, the evidence is not conclusive, and the effect may only be temporary. Spiders primarily “taste” with their feet, so a strong odor may simply cause them to avoid a sprayed surface, not necessarily drive them away completely.
